CAAP BARS FLIGHTS 10,000 FEET FROM KANLAON SURFACE

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on Tuesday prohibited flights from operating 10,000 feet from the surface of Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island due to its ongoing unrest.

In a statement, CAAP said it updated its Notices to Airmen (NOTAM)—which previously only covered the areas of Mayon Volcano and Taal Volcano— but now also included Kanlaon Volcano.

“The CAAP has updated its Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) to inform and alert flying aircraft of the current alert levels and associated risks in light of the ongoing unrest at the Taal, Mayon, and Kanlaon volcanoes,” it said.

For Kanlaon, CAAP said flight operators should avoid flying close to the volcano's summit due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

“Such eruptions may pose a significant hazard to aircraft from the surface up to 10,000 feet,” it said.

CAAP added that entry within the 4-kilometer radius of the permanent danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano was also prohibited.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin on Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Alert Level 1, low-level unrest, was still raised over Kanlaon Volcano.

From 5 a.m. on Monday to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, PHIVOLCS said 5 volcanic earthquakes were recorded at the volcano.

Kanlaon Volcano emitted 1,089 tonnes of sulfur dioxide.

Moderate emission of plumes reaching up to 300 meters was also observed at the volcano, the plumes drifting in a southeasterly direction.

The volcano edifice was inflated, added PHIVOLCS, warning of possible sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions from the volcano. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
